For state residents, prizes greater than $600 are subject to a 3% state tax withholding. Prizes larger than $5,000 are subject to a 3% state tax withholding and an additional 24% federal tax withholding.

About the Mississippi Lottery

Established in 2018 as a way to raise state funds without raising taxes, the Mississippi Lottery officially launched ticket sales on December 1, 2019. Mississippi is the most recent state to join the Multi-State Lottery Association. Lottery proceeds are earmarked for Mississippi education and infrastructure, and the breakdown is as follows: proceeds up to $80 million will go to the State Highway Fund until June 30, 2028, and all proceeds above $80 million will be directed towards the Educational Enhancement Fund.
