Can I remain anonymous if I win the lottery in D.C.?

No. Winners’ names, prize amounts, and area of residence will be made public information. The DC Lottery also requires winners of $25,000 or more to have their photograph taken in order to complete the claims process and receive their winnings.

How much will I pay in taxes if I win the D.C. Lottery?

For prizes greater than $5,000, the District will withhold 8.95% and 24% will be withheld for Federal taxes. Note that if the winner is a resident of a different state, that state’s tax laws and regulations will apply.

It typically takes about three business days to process the claim from when it’s received but may take up to two weeks.

Lottery was established in 1982, and its mission is to provide revenue-generating entertainment through the sale of innovative lottery products and promotions that directly benefits the residents and the economic vitality of the District of Columbia. In its first week of ticket sales, $3.5 million worth of tickets were sold.

Since its inception, the DC Lottery has generated more than $2.14 billion for the District's General Fund. This enables the General Fund to provide for other sectors in the District, including recreational spaces, the youth, and services for minors and the elderly.
