In 1988 the Wisconsin State Legislature authorized the creation of the Wisconsin Lottery, run by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue. On September 18, 1988, the first Wisconsin lottery tickets went on sale for two games: "Match 3" and "Wisconsin Red."
Since its start in 1988, the WI Lottery has paid out more than $7.8 billion to lottery winners, over $877 million to retailers in commissions, and over $4.1 billion for property tax relief for Wisconsin residents. Over the years, the WI Lottery has generated more than $13.9 billion in total revenue with 93% of that revenue going back to the people of Wisconsin.
