In 1987, voters in Virginia voted in favor of a state lottery, establishing the Virginia Lottery as an independent agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The VA Lottery sold its first ticket on September 20, 1988.
All profits from the Virginia Lottery ticket sales go to K-12 public education. In the Fiscal Year 2017, VA Lottery profits totaled over a half a billion dollars, accounting for approximately 9% of school funding in the state of Virginia. From 1989 to June of 2017, the VA Lottery profits totaled more than $11 billion.
