About the South Dakota Lottery

On November 4, 1986, the voters of South Dakota approved a constitutional amendment to allow the creation of the SD Lottery, and in April of 1987 the bill was signed into law. Six months after the legislation was signed into law, the SD Lottery sold its first instant ticket and the lottery repaid its original $1.5 million startup loan back to the state in just three months.

Through the South Dakota General Fund, the lottery gives millions of dollars every year to public education, natural resources, and the promotion of responsible gaming. Since being established, the SD Lottery has provided more than $441 million to the State General Fund, where nearly half of the entire fund is used to support local K-12 schools, state universities, and technical institutes.

The South Dakota Lottery has also provided more than $79 million to the Capital Construction Fund. Local communities use these funds to pay for community drinking water, water systems, recycling and waste disposal programs, and wastewater improvement projects.

The SD Lottery currently offers the following draw games for play: Dakota Cash, Hot Lotto, Lotto America, Lucky for Life, Powerball, and Mega Millions.
