The modern form of the RI Lottery was created in 1974, following a constitutional amendment passed by Rhode Island residents in 1973. In May 1974 the first lottery ticket was sold for $.50 for a the first draw lottery game called "The Lot."
At the end of the first fiscal year, the RI Lottery transferred over $5.6 million into the Rhode Island General Fund. Since its start, the Rhode Island Lottery has returned over $6.9 billion to the General Fund and has paid out over $27 billion to winning lottery players. The revenues generated from the RI Lottery offer tax relief to residents and enhancements to programs for education, public safety, law enforcement, and human services for the elderly and others in need.
