About the North Carolina Lottery

On August 31, 2005, the North Carolina State Lottery Act was signed into law, establishing the North Carolina Education Lottery. In March of the following year, the NC Lottery sold its first scratch-off tickets, and in May, 2006 the NC Lottery sold their first Powerball tickets. Later that year, the NC Lottery added daily evening drawings for Carolina Pick 3 and Carolina Cash 5. Only 399 days after NC Lottery entered the market, total sales were over $1 billion.

With the NC Lottery having been enacted in 2005, North Carolina has one of youngest lottery systems in the United States. The North Carolina Lottery Act created a nine member lottery commission charged with the administration of the education lottery. 100% of the NC Lottery net proceeds go to benefit the state’s education, with the current figure at more than $5.5 billion since its inception. By law, the NC Lottery funds go to paying teacher salaries for grades K-3, school construction, needs-based college financial aid, and pre-kindergarten for at-risk four-year-olds.

The North Carolina Lottery currently has the following draw games to play: Carolina Pick 3, Carolina Pick 4, Carolina Cash 5, Carolina Keno, Lucky for Life, Mega Millions and Powerball.
