About the Massachusetts Lottery

In 1971, the Massachusetts Lottery was established by Massachusetts state legislature of the Commonwealth following the legalization of gambling by the Massachusetts General Court. The legislature established a five-member commission to provide an operating structure for the MA Lottery.

In the following year, the MA Lottery sold its first weekly draw game ticket called "The Game," and in 1974, Massachusetts became the first state to sell instant tickets as an alternative to the weekly jackpot game.

Each year, the MA Lottery returns net profits to the Commonwealth for distribution of essential unrestricted local aid to all of the 351 Massachusetts cities and towns. The MA Lottery has grossed over $105.1 billion in sales, awarded $72.9 billion in prizes, and returned more than $23.6 billion in net profit to the Commonwealth since selling its first game ticket in March, 1972.

The Massachusetts Lottery currently offers the following draw games to play: Numbers Midday, Numbers Evening, Keno, Jackpot Poker, Mass Cash, Megabucks Doubler, Lucky for Life, Mega Millions, and Powerball.
