The Illinois Lottery began selling Lottery tickets on July 30, 1974, and by December 31, the IL Lottery had sold its 100,000,000th ticket. Nearly 15 years later, on November 13, 1989, the Illinois Lottery reached $10 billion in sales.
Initially, IL Lottery profits went to the Illinois State General Revenue Fund until legislation was passed in 1985, earmarking profits for the Common School Fund, which is still the IL Lottery’s major benefactor.
On June 30, 2017, IL Lottery sales topped $2.84 billion for Fiscal Year 2017. More than $723,000,000 in proceeds were forwarded to good causes, including $705.6 million to the Illinois Common School Fund and $15 million to capital projects.
