About the West Virginia Lottery

The WV Lottery was started in 1985 when the West Virginia Legislature passed the Lottery Act. West Virginia’s first instant tickets were sold on January 9, 1986, and more than 1.5 million tickets were sold on the first day alone. By the end of the fiscal year, the WV Lottery had more than $53 million in sales and provided $20 million of those dollars to the state’s General Revenue Fund.

Today, the West Virginia Lottery generates annual sales of more than $1.1 billion, more than $520 million a year of which directly assists the people of West Virginia. Since its inception, the Lottery has generated more than $9 billion for things like public education, state parks, senior services, and the state’s tourism industry.
