About the Rhode Island Lottery

The Rhode Island Lottery was created in 1973 with the passage of a constitutional amendment. The first tickets went on sale in 1974 and, since then, more than $7.4 billion has been generated in revenue. By law, RI Lottery revenue is transferred to the State General Fund, which benefits all Rhode Island residents. The Fund supports tax relief, education, public safety, law enforcement, and human services, and the Rhode Island Legislature is responsible for appropriating money from the General Fund among Rhode Island’s 39 cities and towns.
