About the NC Education Lottery

The North Carolina Education Lottery was established on August 31, 2005 when Governor Mike Easley signed the North Carolina State Lottery Act. Seven months later, sales of scratch-off tickets began, and Powerball was offered to North Carolinians exactly two months after that. By the time the NC Education Lottery was barely a year old, sales had already topped $1 billion. In year three, total sales reached $3 billion and the earnings for education exceeded $1 billion.

Although North Carolina is one of the youngest lottery systems in the United States, it has set record sales for the past 13 consecutive years. In fiscal year 2019, it raised $709.2 million for education and had sales of $2.86 billion.
