HIAWATHA PLAYER WINS $50,000 BY SPENDING ADDITIONAL $1 PER PLAY
June 26, 2009
TOPEKA, KAN. – Richard Holloway has always been a strong believer in paying an extra dollar for Power Play when he plays Powerball, and now he knows why! The 64-year-old Hiawatha resident won $50,000 in the June 24 drawing by matching the first four numbers and the Powerball. Holloway’s prize would have been $10,000, but it was multiplied by five because he purchased the Power Play option, and the Power Play number for that drawing was five.
In past drawings, Holloway has turned a $100 prize into $500 with the Power Play option. He says it just makes sense to add Power Play to your ticket.
“Why wouldn’t you pay an extra buck for the chance to win up to five times as much?” Holloway explained. “It’s just basic math.”
Holloway says he buys two Quick Pick plays for every Powerball drawing, and with Power Play, that’s a $4 ticket.
“I never play Powerball without Power Play, because if I won and didn’t have Power Play, I’d really kick myself,” he said.
Luckily, Holloway didn’t have to kick himself. Instead, he will use his $50,000 to pay for dental work and new glasses for himself and Norma, his wife of 45 years. The Holloways are also planning a trip to Illinois this summer to visit Richard’s 97-year-old mother.
“It’s not a lot of money, but it will sure change our lives for the next few years,” said Holloway.
Richard Holloway is retired. He and his wife have three grown children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Richard purchased his lucky ticket at Casey’s General Store 2153, located at 406 First Street in Hiawatha.
